Sarah dove head first into pottery after taking a class at Seward Park in 2022, and became an immediate addict, much to the surprise of this generalist who previously acquired and discarded new hobbies with abandon. They revel in the tactile nature of wheel throwing and sculpture, and there is often a direct correlation between their happiness and the amount of wet clay coating their hands and apron. As a biology professor, Sarah loves to nerd out about how and why things work. Ceramics nurtures their technical and artistic curiosity simultaneously. Their work is often inspired by nature on both the macro and microscopic scales.

Sarah enjoys playing with contradictions. They are delighted when a piece turns out to have hidden layers – something that looks a little nonchalant on the shelf but captures your attention with a textured rim or a slip-trailed handle every time you lift it to your mouth. While almost all of their work is functional, they like to play at making pieces that feel mildly nonsensical for this material, such as delicate ceramic stemware or a cup that can be tethered to the front of a paddleboard.

Sarah also appreciates the camaraderie of pottery, particularly the way wood and soda firings bring people from disparate backgrounds together with a shared responsibility towards the land, the kiln, and each other’s work in a way that can transcend language and culture. Their interest in ceramics has helped them to make connections and learn from potters in Chile and Taiwan, to whom they are very grateful.
