Clark
Kate Clark is a multidisciplinary artist that has created art projects nationally and internationally. Her studio practice explores the constant reinterpretation and reincarnation that folk figures undergo, and how they express themselves through everyday people. While she works in many mediums, Kate returns to clay because she can do things with it she loves most: draw, paint, and squish material into figures.
Much of her studio practice reflects a fascination with the sculptural morphing of the human female form—rooted in both her ambivalence toward her assigned gender and her deep admiration for women throughout history. She frequently reimagines female figures from classical art, and her decorative style draws on Euro-American craft traditions—once mostly practiced by men but now largely carried on by women—such as Nordic rosemaling and Pennsylvania Dutch folk art.
