Renewing Traditions with Carol Gouthro
Mondays 9am-noon 9/8-11/10 - $285
From Greek Attic Ware to Renaissance Majolica, from Chinese three-color ware to Japanese haniwa figures; historical examples of ceramics can offer us an inspiring and exciting springboard for our own exploration. In this ten week handbuilding class, we’ll draw upon many examples from books and original artifacts, explore different techniques of making and finishing, and use our own experiences to make new and exciting work. Previous clay experience is necessary for this class.
Beginning and Intermediate Handbuilding and Surface Decoration with Carol Gouthro
Mondays 7-10pm 9/8-11/10 - $285
Make your own festive and colorful dinnerware, a special one-of-a-kind gift, or that cookie jar you’ve always wanted. Weekly demonstrations will include slab-building, coil techniques, drop and press molds, and alternative forming methods. You will get a thorough introduction to the wide spectrum of the low-fire underglaze and glaze palette, as well as the enhancing tones of slips and stains. All levels of students are welcomed in this relaxed and friendly class.
Wheelthrowing East to West with Rob Fornell
Mondays 7-10pm 9/8-11/10 - $285
Japanese pottery traditions provide a deep taproot for many potters. Whatever your skill level, you will learn new approaches to clay which stress sound wheel basics, hand building, and decorating techniques with an Asian bent. Learn how to personalize your work with local materials, and take advantage of Rob’s many resources and examples that he gleaned from living and working over seven years in Japan.

Tuesday Wheel with Damian Grava
Tuesdays 10am-1pm 9/9-11/11 - $285
In this all-levels class, the beginning students will have a chance to get the basics under their belts. The more seasoned students will have opportunity to explore new altering techniques and surface options. Roll up your sleeves and hone your skills, all under the expert eye of a fine teacher. The autumn focus will be on experimentation with different slips and decorating techniques.
Build on This- A beginning and intermediate wheel class with Bill Wilcox
Tuesdays 7p-10pm 9/9-11/11 - $285
Learn wheelthrowing essentials in this thorough and engaging class. Nothing beats a solid grounding in the fundamentals of wedging, centering, opening, pulling, shaping, altering, trimming, and glazing. If you’ve always wanted to throw pots on the wheel, (or maybe you did it a million years ago in school), this is the chance you’ve been waiting for!

he Human Figure in Bas Relief with Joan Johnson
Tuesdays 7p-10pm 9/16-11/18 - $350 covers additional model fees
(note different start and end dates for this class)
In this class, students will make 1½ inch thick tiles, which will be the basis for several deep relief projects. We’ll draw imagery from our use of a model, a mirror, photographs, and your incredible imagination. We’ll craft tiles in series. Cold-finish options, as well as the standard ceramic methods will be explored. Students at any level of experience are welcome in this class.

Wednesday Clay: a handbuilding and sculpture class with Bethany Woll
Wednesdays 10am-1pm 9/10-11/12 - $285
Many of the students in this on-going and project-oriented class continue year after year; learning new skills, helping each other, and tapping into the wealth of wisdom their teacher has at her fingertips. This friendly group is always open to newcomers who want a supportive and engaging clay experience.
'Zing', or how to give your pots that special something with Matt Allison
Wednesdays 7pm-10pm 9/10-11/12 - $285
You know how some people’s pots just have that extra grace with the handle, a satisfying form, a compelling attachment? In this class, Matt will help you learn to identify just what that something is, and how to move towards it. Bring along a favorite pot of yours or someone else’s to the first class. We’ll use lots of examples from our bisque collection, and the instructor’s wide knowledge of ceramic history and practice for an exciting and engaging class. Intermediate skill levels are needed for this class.

START UP : a six-week introduction to Clay, with Miki Willis
Wednesdays 6pm-9pm 9/24-10/29 (note different time and fee) - $180
Stretch it, bend it, coil it, push it, pinch it, roll it…………Clay is an exciting art material because of its versatile abilities. Take this five week beginner’s class to start having fun with clay. You’ll learn handbuilding techniques, and surface treatment options, and even get a shot on the wheel. Who knows, you might not want to stop! (Students will have the option of extending this class to the full ten weeks for an additional fee)
LIVELY LINES AND SASSY SURFACES: Clay and the Natural World with Jen Mills
Thursdays 10am-1pm 9/11-11/13 - $285
Be inspired by the wide variety of possibilities that nature provides (color, texture, form, pattern) for creating both functional and sculptural work! With field trips outside the studio and some guided explorations of your specific interests, we’ll handbuild or use the wheel to bring the livelyoutside world into the studio.
Basic Wheel with Sam Scott
Saturdays 10 am-1pm 9/13-11/15 $285
We all start somewhere. This entry level class is for students with no prior ceramic experience. Learn the basic fundamentals of wheelthrowing, trimming and glazing. Through frequent demonstrations, individualized instruction, and lots of practice, students will have a solid foundation to build upon. Come on, you’ll have fun! Continuing students are also welcome. Combine this class with the Saturday practice time and spend an entire day in the studio!
Kid’s Classes
Animal Dreams with Trevor Johnson for 5-9 year olds
Thursdays 3:30-4:30 pm 9/25-11/13 $75
Animals have been used for millennia as a means to tell stories, and to explore our imaginations. In this class for beginners, we’ll use basic handbuilding methods to make a fantastical ‘zoo’, and make up the stories to go with our animals. At the end of the session, we’ll bring all our creatures together for a photo shoot, and a celebration of our collective creativity.
What’s for Dinner?- a continuing class with Trevor Johnson for 6-9 year olds
Thursdays 4:30-5:30pm 9/25-11/13 $75
If you’ve been in the kid’s classes here before, or have had experience in school, this class will build on those skills. This time we’re exploring what’s for dinner, and will make colorful dinnerware and our favorite foods out of clay. We’ll set the table for an imaginary feast and make up stories about who is coming to dinner. All materials are included. Bring an imagination, and dress to mess.
Clay Games with Peter Avriett for 9-15 years old
Tuesdays, 4-6pm, with possible practice times on Saturdays from 3:30-5pm. 9/22-11/10 $100
Get ready for fun, as we push the boundaries between game activity and art class. We’ll build team spirit as well as some cool stuff using handbuilding and wheel techniques. Wear some clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
The Family Affair: a parents and kids class with Peter Avriett
For adults and kids (ages 4 and up) Saturdays, 1pm-2:30pm 10/27-11/15
$100 for each adult and $50 for each child
This handbuilding class will be designed with fun collaborative projects for families. All the basic skills will be covered with some projects lasting for several weeks. All ages are welcome. This quarter, we’ll make special creations for your holiday table that will amaze and entertain your guests!
